Dear members of the academic community,

We invite you to a photo exhibition in the framework of the DeMiNeS-LingLand project "The city writes (on) its walls. The linguistic landscape of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki", in which students of the School of German Language and Literature in the pre- and postgraduate courses of study exhibit their own photographs of linguistic messages on walls, signs, posters and announcements on the campus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The exhibition serves as a visual representation of our research project, which focuses on exploring these messages, which are often carriers of subcultural practices and form part of the linguistic landscape of the contemporary multilingual, multicultural and globalized urban spaces.

Who writes or 'sprays' and what? What is the intended audience? How are slogans composed, and what media are utilized? What is the role of politics and critique? Is there a target group to which the message is addressed?

By bringing together diverse approaches and the active participation of students from the School of German Language and Literature, we aim to foster a scientific dialogue on urban centers and their planning. The photographs captured by the students will be archived in a comprehensive digital database available at https://demines-lingland.del.auth.gr/ This database is continuously updated to facilitate the examination of this particular form of communication. Our objective is to enable cross- linguistic and cross-national comparisons, offering insights into potential similarities and differences on both a national and international level. We hope that this database will be utilized not only for scientific purposes but also as a resource for the general public. Through the DeMiNeS LingLand database, we aspire to contribute to the visibility and understanding of the linguistic landscape of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The project is conducted in the framework of the German Mediterranean Network on Linguistics („Deutsch-Mittelmeerisches Netzwerk Sprachwissenschaft”), funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, 2017 Humboldt Alumni Award for Innovative Networking Initiatives to Athina Sioupi), and the Lab for Language Research and Didactics of the School of German Language and Literature.

Organizers: Prof. Athina Sioupi, Prof. Anastasia Stamou, Lucie Olet (Erasmus+ Trainee), Zacharoula Kampouri (BA student), Alexandra Gaitatzi (MA student)
